Chad Alan Goldberg: “Between Imaginaries of Domination and Supersession: Portrayals of the Relation between Jews and Capitalism in the German Sociological Tradition.”
April 10, 2014 @ 4:00 am - 6:00 pm
Chad Alan Goldberg is an ARC Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Graduate Center, CUNY and Professor of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is also affiliated with European Studies, Jewish Studies, and the Mosse Program in History. His primary research interest is the historical sociology of citizenship, broadly understood to include the development of citizenship rights and duties over time, changing levels and forms of civic engagement and political participation, and shifting patterns of civil inclusion and exclusion. His book Citizens and Paupers: Relief, Rights, and Race, from the Freedmen’s Bureau to Workfare (University of Chicago Press, 2008), investigated struggles over the citizenship rights of welfare state claimants in U.S. history. More recently, his research has begun to explore the significance of Jewish emancipation and its repercussions in Europe as a paradigmatic case for understanding processes of civil inclusion and exclusion more generally.
